June 2009

This issue is all about our Special Event taking place this month. 23rd June at Blenheim Palace promises to be the networking occasion of the season!

So what's so "special" about it? And why should you book a place?

AN ACCLAIMED SPEAKER

Liz Jackson is a truly inspirational figure and her story is extraordinary. With no advanced educational background, she launched her telemarketing company in 1998 at the age of 25. Support came from The Prince's Trust in the form of a £1,000 grant and a loan of £4,000.

Today, Great Guns Marketing turns over more than £3 million, growing at a rate of over 60% per annum. For Liz especially, this is an amazing achievement as she is totally blind. The year Liz started her business she lost her sight completely as a result of the eye disorder Retinitis Pigmentosa. However, this didn't stop her from pursuing her dreams. In September 2003, Liz won the Women Mean Business Award, sponsored by T Mobile and The Sunday Express, it is Britain's biggest award dedicated to women who have achieved outstanding success running their own businesses. In 2007, she was awarded an MBE for services to business.

A STUNNING VENUE

Only this year Blenheim Palace won a silver award in the coveted "Enjoy England Excellence Awards" as a large visitor attraction. It is a historic and impressive location. Why not combine your lunch with a stroll around the grounds or visit the beautiful State Rooms? One room you are sure to visit is the magnificent Marlborough Room where we will be enjoying our lunch. Originally the Palace kitchen, The Marlborough Room has a beautiful double vaulted ceiling rising to the full height of the Palace.

A GOURMET LUNCH

The lunch takes place between 12.00pm and 2.15pm and costs £50 (£45 for members). Fifty percent of the profits from this event will be invested in The Hunger Project and in particular for training 100 women leaders in India. ALL ABOARD FOR GREAT IDEAS FOR KIDS

Are you a hard-pressed parent who has trouble keeping the children entertained? Do you struggle for ideas in the school holidays or when the weather’s bad?
Help is at hand: All Aboard, a new book by award-winning nursery owner Sarah Steel, is packed with great ideas for keeping children entertained without resorting to the TV or the Xbox.

“Sometimes days at home with little people can seem long and challenging and I hope that this book will give parents and carers a little inspiration,” says Sarah, a mother-of-two who set up The Old Station Nursery Ltd in 2002.

Our May meeting was very active, thanks to our speaker, Elizabeth Kuhnke. She had us up on our feet, helping us to stand properly and project our voices. We practised positive words and proper breathing before some of us got some personal coaching from Elizabeth, to help us with our presentations. Elizabeth tells us that getting our breathing right is the key to developing a powerful voice. Here's how to do it.

Tips for proper breathing

Release physical tension. Tension creates tightness. A powerful voice needs space in which to resonate.

Create a firm foundation. Keep your torso opened to allow your voice to pass freely and confidently through your body.

Imagine yourself as a set of bellows. When you inhale, your diaphragm expands. When you exhale, it contracts, allowing the air to flow in and out freely.
