Techniques for Meeting Strangers
Over the last month a big part of my networking conversations has been how to confidently enter a room full of strangers and meeting new people without turning into a bag of nerves. Both of those seem to be what people fear the most when networking.
My advice is to stop focusing on yourself when in this situation. When you're wondering what you're going to say, what people are going to think about you and how you'll survive the experience the chances are you'll not listen to a word anyone else says. By focusing on the other people, asking them questions and putting them at their ease (even if you're feeling nervous), you'll make their experience of the event (and you) a really positive one.
Good listening is rare these days, so they'll remember you far more for being a great listener, than for what you say. You may think you won't get anything out of the experience but I invite you to try it out. You might learn something from the people you're listening to that you can use in your business, identify an opportunity for you or start a great networking relationship. Remember, networking is much more than doing business with each other.
For an opportunity to put your listening into practice, come along to Ladies that Lunch this month. On 24th June we're off to Blenheim Palace for an event with past and present members, visitors and guests alike. Currently 24 women and men are coming along to network in great surroundings in the Spencer Churchill Room (with lovely views over the lake at Blenheim). Do join them by booking online or contacting me direct on lesley@lesleyreader.co.uk .
