Accelerating your Business Growth
Our speaker at April's Ladies that Lunch was Sally Goodsell, Chief Executive of Finance South East who talked about growing your business through investment.
Sally told us that women often start businesses with a third less capital than men. Our businesses grow slower, but often last longer. The government has a target of 10,000 more women owned businesses in the next 10 years and recently established a specialist fund of £12.5M to support that growth. In the south east 15% of all businesses are owned by women and Sally is committed to increasing that substantially.
Often when women are looking for money to invest in their businesses, they don't fit the bank's criteria. However there are other options. The Government has a Small Firms Loan Guarantee scheme, run through the major banks. This provides 75% of a loan between £35k-£250k for small businesses operating less than 5 years. (see details/criteria through Business Link ).
Also, Finance South East run a number of specialist programmes for women entrepreneurs (and men too!) and Sally's advice to get investment is (and she can offer you support on this):
-
decide why you want to grow
-
be credible and have a passion for your business
-
put yourself in the shoes of an investor
-
present your case thoroughly
