Reflections

The last Ladies that Lunch meeting of the year was an opportunity to unwind and reflect on the year nearly finished.  Alongside their introductions I asked all of the attendees to answer one of a series of questions when they introduced themselves.  The questions got them to think about what's happened for them in 2007.

Very often we move from one task to another without spending the time to look back at the experience and what we've got from it.

I encourage you to take five minutes and respond to the following questions:

  1. What's been your biggest achievement this year?
  2. What was your greatest challenge?
  3. What was the most fun you had?
  4. What have you learned about yourself?
  5. What one thing would make you more effective next year?

For all of us the responses were a mixture of business and personal - some had undertaken sporting challenges (such as marathons and rowing competitions), for others it was getting a business started, or taking it to the next level.

My year has been a real journey into who I am and what's been holding me back.  I've learned that when I'm unsure about something, instead of asking for help I push other people away.  Rather than working with people, I think I have to do it all myself.  Now I know differently and I'm working hard to turn that around.  What I'm experiencing is richer relationships with everyone around me and a great input of ideas and support.  These insights have come about as a result of some remarkable personal development training with an organisation called Landmark Education.  It's made a huge difference for me!

I wish all of you a happy festive season.  May you spend the holidays with those that you love and enjoy all the celebrations.  For 2008 I wish you health, happiness and prosperity!

Margaret Heffernan

The Secret Millionaire

Wednesday 19th December

Margaret Heffernan, who was the speaker at the joint networking event at the Feathers in Woodstock back in March (and gave a great talk about the secrets of successful women entrepreneurs), is one of the featured entrepreneurs in tonight's episode of The Secret Millionaire.  This series running on Channel 4 at 9pm on Wednesday night takes wealthy entrepreneurs into deprived areas of the country where they live undercover for 9 days.  They then reveal who they are and give their own money to individuals and organisations that they wish to help.

Each of the millionaires has found their experience to be moving and humbling (and life changing for many). Margaret who made her millions as an internet pioneer goes into a poor district of Nottingham, a city with a reputation for guns and drugs.

Marlborough School seeks inspiring person from Construction Industry

Wednesday 9th January

Are you training or working in the construction industry (or know someone that is) and would like to inspire some students to take this route?

The Marlborough School in Woodstock is organising a conference for its year 11 students on January 9th.  This conference is career based and one of the workshops will be giving details of careers within the construction industry.

They are looking for someone to present 'a day in their life in the construction industry'. This would fit with the first part of the workshop which gives details of the types of careers in the industry, qualifications, apprenticeships etc.  The workshop will run 4 times during the course of the whole day, so you would need to be available from 8.30 to 4pm.
