A Long Walk in the Rain
This Saturday evening just gone I joined over 700 people to take part in the first Oxford Moonlight Stroll. The gym at St Edwards School was overflowing with an array of bright orange t-shirts and a busy trade in plastic see-through kagouls.
We set off at 10:30pm in the rain to walk 9.5 miles through Oxford to raise money for Sobell House Hospice Charity and Fox FM's Help an Oxfordshire Child. Despite the often driving rain, spirits were high and we got plenty of support along the way. Passing cars would sound their horns and late night revellers were bemused by the sea of orange everywhere.
At the half-way point at Magdalen College School we were treated to Fairtrade bananas and the chance to top up our water supplies. Around 1am it finally stopped raining and we had the opportunity to view the quiet back streets of Oxford in a new light. I found the sense of history very tangible and thought about all the people who had trodden that route before.
The sight of a caterpillar of orange snaking up the Woodstock Road was great as it meant we were on the home straight. We finished just after 2am. My legs definitely felt they'd walked a long way and my hips were stiff but I'd done it. A bacon sandwich in the gym at the end was very welcome.
I'd like to thank everyone involved in the organisation of the walk and to all the volunteer marshalls along the way who cheered us on. Also, thanks to Cathy, Jackie and Dawn, my walking companions who made the journey seem much shorter.
Thus far I've raised £300. If you'd like to sponsor me retrospectively then go to my fundraising page to donate online and enable me to reach my target of £500. Every pound makes a difference.
Alternatively you can join us for July's Ladies that Lunch on the 24th, when our speaker is Angela Sherman, Women in Enterprise's 'Woman of the Year 2006' who'll help with 'Thinking your Way to Success'. I look forward to seeing you there.
