Taking Time Out
I've just come back from a week at the Edinburgh Festival where I saw a diverse range of shows from South Korean acrobats and a Latvian play about old age without dialogue to ballet and book signings.
It was a great way to recharge the batteries, whilst getting a real cultural 'fix'. This is my first block of time away since starting my business last year and I realised how important it is to take regular breaks.
When you run your own business it's easy to get caught up in the day to day things - meeting clients, marketing, networking, accounts, paperwork and so on. In the early days you want to be there and see it develop and you're putting all your spare cash into growing the business.
However, as I've just discovered taking time out has many benefits. Firstly, it's an opportunity to relax and unwind - leaving the emails and the "I'll just do this before I finish for the evening" behind for a while.
Secondly, by physically being somewhere else it gave me a bit of distance and consequently a different perspective on things. When you're in the middle of it all, it's difficult to be objective. The physical distance helped me look at my business with fresh eyes.
Also, by doing something else I got inspired about my business and how I can develop the different aspects of it (very much like solving a problem whilst doing something completely different).
All in all, I came back with new ideas, renewed energy and some great memories.
Have you taken time off from your career/business over the summer? Do you need some new perspectives?
If you'd like to find the keys to your success and effectiveness, then you've still got a few days to register for your place at our September workshop, 'Unstoppable You'. See the events calendar (right) for details.
Professional speaker and business coach Mike Pagan will talk to us about 'Celebrating Success' in our businesses and careers for our September lunch.
I look forward to welcoming you to an LTL event soon.
